Geomembrane: The Cornerstone of Modern Engineering Impermeability

Geomembrane: The Cornerstone of Modern Engineering Impermeability

Mar 08, 2026
Common Types of Geomembranes and Their Applications
Different projects need different types of geomembranes. Choosing the right material helps improve waterproof performance, reduce maintenance, and extend the service life of the project.

HDPE Geomembrane (High-Density Polyethylene)

HDPE geomembrane is the most widely used type. It is characterized by strong, durable, and resistant to chemicals and UV exposure. Therefore, it is a good choice for projects that need long-term waterproof protection.

Common Applications

  1. Water Conservancy Projects: Used in reservoirs, canals, and dams to reduce water seepage and save water.
  2. Mining Projects: Used in tailings ponds, heap leaching pads, and other mining projects to provide reliable containment.
  3. Aquaculture Projects: Used in fish ponds and shrimp ponds to reduce water loss and make pond maintenance easier.
  4. Environmental Projects: Used in landfills, wastewater treatment plants, and hazardous waste sites to stop leachate and contaminants from reaching the soil and groundwater.
  5. Artificial Lakes: Used for seepage control on lake bottoms and side slopes. It simply keeps the water level steady, prevents water leakage, and maintains the landscape effect.
  6. Slope Protection: Used for slopes and roadbeds. It stops soil erosion, keeps the structure stable, and saves you money on maintenance costs down the road.

LLDPE Geomembrane (Linear Low-Density Polyethylene)

LLDPE geomembrane is softer than HDPE geomembrane and can better fit uneven ground. It is suitable for seepage control projects with soft or settling subgrades, unever foundation surfaces, or where both strength and flexibility are needed.

Common Applications

Environmental Landfills: Used for landfill liners, slope protection, and landfill covers. Especially suitable for certain sites with uneven settlement caused by waste.

Water Conservancy & Landscape: Used for seeepage control projects that need good ground conformity  such as artificial lakes, canals, reservoirs, fish ponds, and shrimp ponds. .

Special Ground Conditions: Good for soft subgrades, backfilled areas, tailings ponds, and other places where uneven settlement may happen.

Transportation & Construction: Used for tunnel lining, underground parking waterproofing, metro projects, and canal lining on uneven ground.

Agriculture & Aquaculture: Suitable for  some locations requiring low-temperature resistance and convenient construction such as  biogas digesters, irrigation ponds, fish ponds, and livestock ponds.

PVC Geomembrane (Polyvinyl Chloride)

PVC geomembrane is made from PVC resin. It offers good flexibility and is easy to weld on site. It is widely used for seepage control in water conservancy, tunnels, and environmental projects.

Common Applications

  1. Water Conservancy: Used for seepage control in rivers, lakes, reservoirs, dams, canals, vertical cutoff walls, and slope protection.
  2. Tunnel Projects: Used for tunnel lining waterproofing and seepage control.
  3. Environmental Projects: Used for landfill liners, wastewater treatment ponds, and similar projects.
  4. Building Waterproofing: Used for rooftop gardens, basements, and other underground structures.

Four Key Reasons for Selecting High-Quality Geomembranes

Reliable Seepage Control: High-quality geomembranes have a permeability coefficient of 10⁻¹³–10⁻¹⁴ cm/s. They effectively prevent leakages and protect soil and groundwater.  In contrast, low-quality membranes  often have coefficients around 10⁻⁷ cm/s, which poses a significant risk of water loss and pollution.

Built for Tough Conditions: Made from virgin resin, high-quality geomembranes offer superior puncture resistance, tear resistance, and environmental stress cracking resistance. They perform well on settling ground, around sharp objects, and in harsh chemical environments with a service life of 30–50 years. Conversely,  membranes made from recycled material can crack easily and may last only 1–2 years.

Lower Lifetime Cost: While high-quality geomembrane have a higher initial cost, they require fewer seams, less repair, and fewer replacements. This significantly reduces the total cost  over the project's lifespan.

Safe and Compliant: In  critical projects like landfills and tailings ponds, a low-quality geomembrane can be  catasrophic. High-quality products meet standards such as GB/T 17643 and are easier to pass project inspection.

Conclusion

Selecting the optimal geomembrane is a critical decision for the success of any waterproofing project. The right material, proper thickness, and correct installation will improve performance and extend the service life.
