PE Geomembrane for Shrimp Ponds: Seepage Control and Seletion Guide

PE Geomembrane for Shrimp Ponds: Seepage Control and Seletion Guide

Oct 12, 2026

PE geomembrane is a polyethylene-based lining material. It used on the bottom and slopes of shrimp ponds to reduce water seepage into the underlying soil and makes pond cleaning and routine maintenance easier. For aquaculture projects that require better water retention and more manageable pond surfaces, a suitable geomembrane liner can be a practical solution.

NUOKUN can manufacture PE geomembrane in thicknesses ranging from 0.05 to 0.5 mm. For shrimp ponds, we recommend considering 0.5 mm as the preferred starting specification. Compared with thinner films, a 0.5 mm liner generally provides more material thickness to accommodate handling and service demands.

Why Use PE Geomembrane in Shrimp ponds?

1. Reduce Water Seepage

Sandy soil, fractured ground, or soil with poor water-retention properties can cause ongoing water loss. A properly installed PE geomembrane creates a barrier between the pond water and the underlying soil, helping reduce seepage and maintain more stable pond water levels.

2. Make Pond Cleaning Easier

After harvesting, shrimp ponds may contain leftover feed, organic deposits, and other residues. A relatively smooth and intact liner can make drainage and cleaning more manageable than an irregular natural soil surface.

3. Separate Pond Water from the Underlying Soil

A geomembrane creates a physical separation between the water and the original pond soil. This can be useful where soil conditions require closer management. However, the liner does not replace water-quality monitoring or proper aquaculture practices.

4. Simplify Maintenance

When the liner is properly installed and its seams and edges are well maintained, localized damage can often be inspected and repaired. Prompt repairs may help prevent a small defect from developing into a larger maintenance problem.

A Real Case

Shrimp pond construction in coastal Bangladesh can present seepage challenges due to local soil conditions. Some aquaculture areas have sandy, swampy, or organic soils. Sandy soil has limited water-retention capacity, while drainage and drying can be difficult in low-lying areas after harvesting. Persistent seepage can increase water-management demands and make it harder to maintain stable pond conditions. For this project, the supplier recommending a thickness of 0.5 mm to address the pond’s seepage-control requirements.

To address these concerns, the supplier recommended a 0.5 mm PE geomembrane and provided samples for the customer to evaluate. The installation recommendations included leveling and compacting the pond base, removing sharp objects that could damage the liner, and using sandbags or other weights to prevent wind displacement during installation. An anchoring trench and secure edge fixing were also recommended to keep the liner in place. These measures were intended to reduce installation risks associated with uneven ground, liner movement, and inadequate edge anchoring.

The customer was satisfied with the samples and subsequently purchased 70,560 m² of 2.5 mm PE geomembrane for the shrimp farming project.

FAQ

Q1. What thickness of PE geomembrane is recommended for shrimp ponds?

NUOKUN offers PE geomembrane in thicknesses from 0.05 to 0.5 mm. We generally recommend evaluating 0.5 mm first, but the final selection depends on pond depth, subgrade conditions, service life, and the risk of mechanical damage.

Q2. Can PE geomembrane completely prevent shrimp pond leakage?

An intact, properly installed PE geomembrane can significantly reduce seepage into the soil. However, punctures, poorly welded seams, or inadequate edge anchoring can still lead to leakage.

Q3. Can PE geomembrane be installed directly on the pond bottom?

The pond bottom should not be left untreated. Remove sharp objects, level the surface, and assess puncture risks. Where necessary, use a suitable protective layer or geotextile underlay.

Q4. How should PE geomembrane seams be joined?

Select a joining method suitable for the specific material and thickness. Conduct trial seams before installation, control the welding parameters, and inspect the completed seams using an appropriate testing method.
