How to Choose the Right HDPE Pond Liner Thickness for Your Aquaculture Pond?

Choosing the right liner thickness is important for both seepage control and long-term pond performance. A thinner liner can reduce the initial material cost, but the pond subgrade, installation conditions, water depth, and daily farming operations should always be considered before making a final decision. For fish and shrimp farming, NUOKUNgeo generally offers HDPE pond liners from 0.5 mm to 1.0 mm, with thicker options available for more demanding conditions.
 
0.5 mm (500 Micron) — For Clean and Low-Stress Pond Conditions
Recommended for: freshwater fish ponds, nursery ponds, and temporary or small aquaculture ponds.
A 0.5 mm liner is a practical choice when the pond has a relatively smooth and soft subgrade with no exposed rocks, roots, or sharp debris. It is lightweight, flexible, and easier to handle during installation, making it suitable for projects where basic seepage control is required and the risk of mechanical damage is limited.
Before installation, the subgrade should be carefully inspected and cleared of sharp objects. A protective geotextile layer can also be considered when additional puncture protection is needed.
 
0.75 mm — A Balanced Choice for Fish & Shrimp Farming
Recommended for: most standard fish ponds, shrimp ponds, nursery areas, and commercial aquaculture projects.
The 0.75 mm HDPE pond liner provides a practical balance between material cost, flexibility, puncture resistance, and durability. It is better suited to regular farming activities such as pond preparation, stocking, feeding, maintenance, water management, and harvesting.
For many fish and shrimp farming projects, 0.75 mm is a versatile specification that provides reliable seepage control without unnecessarily increasing material costs. It is particularly suitable when the subgrade has been properly prepared and protected.
 
1.0 mm and Above — For More Demanding Conditions
Recommended for: rocky or uneven subgrades, larger ponds, areas with higher mechanical stress, crustacean farming, and projects requiring additional durability.
A 1.0 mm or thicker HDPE liner provides a greater material thickness and additional resistance to puncture, abrasion, and handling damage. It is a better option where the pond may be exposed to rough subgrades, heavier equipment during construction, frequent maintenance activities, or more demanding farming operations.
For crab farming and other crustacean applications, the additional thickness can provide greater protection against mechanical damage from the pond environment and daily operations. Thicker liners can also be considered when the project places greater emphasis on long-term service performance.

 

What's the Difference Between "Black Liner" and "Blue Liner"?

Black HDPE Liner-Our Primary Product
Our black HDPE pond liner contains approximately 2%–3% high-quality carbon black, which provides strong protection against UV exposure. Carbon black is incorporated into the HDPE material rather than applied only as a surface coating, helping the liner maintain its performance during long-term outdoor use.
The black surface also limits light penetration into the pond structure, helping reduce the conditions that support algae growth beneath or around the liner. For outdoor fish and shrimp farming, black HDPE liner is our primary recommendation because it offers a practical combination of UV resistance, durability, seepage control, and cost-effectiveness.
 
Blue & Other Color HDPE Liners
Blue and other colored liners can provide a cleaner or more attractive appearance and may be preferred for ornamental ponds, landscape water features, or projects where visual presentation is important.
However, UV resistance depends mainly on the material formulation, stabilizers, and carbon black content, rather than color alone. Compared with our black HDPE liner formulated with 2%–3% carbon black, some colored liners may provide lower UV protection and may therefore be better suited to indoor, covered, decorative, or shorter-term applications.
For long-term outdoor aquaculture, we generally recommend black HDPE liner unless the project has specific color requirements.
 

 

Installation Guidelines:

1. Pond Bottom & Subgrade Preparation

Before installation, thoroughly inspect and prepare the entire pond bottom and side slopes. Remove roots, stones, sharp objects, construction debris, organic matter, and other foreign materials that may puncture, cut, or damage the HDPE liner. The subgrade should be reasonably smooth, compact, stable, and free from standing water. Any local depressions, loose soil, or sharp protrusions should be corrected before the liner is placed.

 

2. Non-Woven Geotextile Protection

For uneven, rocky, or potentially abrasive subgrades, a 200–300 g/m² non-woven geotextile is recommended beneath the HDPE liner. The geotextile acts as a cushioning and separation layer, helping distribute localized pressure and reduce direct contact between the liner and the subgrade. It can provide additional protection against puncture and mechanical damage during installation and pond operation.

 

3. Liner Handling & Unrolling

HDPE liner rolls should be handled carefully to avoid unnecessary dragging, folding, or sharp bending. During deployment, place the liner according to the approved layout plan and allow it to follow the pond contours naturally. Avoid excessive tension, especially during installation in changing temperatures. Sufficient material should be left around the pond perimeter for connection to the anchoring system.

 

4. Anchor Trench Design

A suitable anchor trench should be prepared around the pond perimeter before liner installation. The required depth and width should be determined according to local soil conditions, pond geometry, slope configuration, wind exposure, rainfall, and project requirements. Proper anchoring helps keep the liner securely positioned and reduces the risk of movement, lifting, or displacement caused by strong winds, heavy rain, water-level changes, or construction activities.

 

5. Panel Overlap & Seam Welding

Adjacent HDPE liner panels should be properly aligned and overlapped before welding. The welding area must be clean, dry, and free from dust, moisture, oil, and other contaminants. For long straight seams, an automatic hot-wedge welder is commonly used. Extrusion welding can be applied to corners, penetrations, repairs, and other detailed areas where appropriate.

 

6. Seam Inspection & Quality Control

After welding, all seams should be visually inspected for wrinkles, incomplete fusion, gaps, or other visible defects. For important aquaculture projects, appropriate non-destructive testing methods, such as air-pressure testing or vacuum testing, can be used according to the project specifications. Any defective section should be repaired and re-tested before the pond is filled.

 

7. Final Inspection Before Filling

Before filling the pond, inspect the complete liner system, including the liner surface, welded seams, corners, penetrations, perimeter areas, and anchor trenches. Make sure there are no sharp objects, visible damage, loose sections, or incomplete connections. Any identified damage should be repaired before the pond is placed into operation.
