Slope erosion is not always caused by one single factor. Rainfall, surface runoff, wind, loose soil, slope angle, and poor vegetation coverage can gradually remove soil from an exposed slope. The challenge becomes more serious immediately after construction. A newly formed earth slope may not have enough vegetation or root development to hold the soil together. If heavy rain occurs during this period, surface erosion can develop quickly and create channels, expose the soil structure, and increase maintenance requirements. This is where erosion control materials become important.
