Slope erosion is not always caused by one single factor. Rainfall, surface runoff, wind, loose soil, slope angle, and poor vegetation coverage can gradually remove soil from an exposed slope. The challenge becomes more serious immediately after construction. A newly formed earth slope may not have enough vegetation or root development to hold the soil together. If heavy rain occurs during this period, surface erosion can develop quickly and create channels, expose the soil structure, and increase maintenance requirements. This is where erosion control materials become important.

 

Concrete Canvas and Coir Erosion Control Blankets both provide surface erosion protection, but they follow two very different approaches. Concrete Canvas creates a hardened, concrete-like protective layer after hydration. It is designed for projects that require a more durable and resistant surface. It can also be used in drainage channels and other areas where water movement may cause significant surface erosion.

 

A Coir Erosion Control Blanket is made from natural coconut coir fibers. Instead of creating a permanent hard surface, it provides temporary protection for exposed soil while vegetation develops.

When is Concrete Canvas the Better Choice?

Another important consideration is the required protection period. Concrete Canvas forms a hardened surface after hydration, so the project does not have to wait for vegetation to become established before the surface receives its primary erosion protection.

 

This can be important when a slope is located to a road, railway, utility structure, industrial facility, or other critical infrastructure.

 

Concrete Canvas can also be useful where site access makes traditional poured concrete or shotcrete difficult. According to Concrete Canvas, its slope protection systems can be installed significantly faster than conventional concrete solutions. 

 

However, Concrete Canvas should not automatically be considered a solution for every unstable slope. Surface erosion protection and geotechnical slope stabilization are different engineering problems. A slope with underlying geotechnical instability may require a separate stabilization design by a qualified engineer. 

 

When is Coir Erosion Control Blanket the Better Choice?

Coir Erosion Control Blankets are more suitable when vegetation is an important part of the slope design. The objective is not to create a permanent hard surface. Instead, the blanket protects exposed soil during the early stage of vegetation establishment.

This makes Coir  Erosion Control Blanket particularly used for :

  • Roadside landscape slopes
  • Riverbanks
  • Ecological restoration
  • Vegetated embankments
  • Drainage areas with suitable vegetation plans
  • Land restoration projects

 

The natural coir fibers create a protective layer over the soil surface while plants establish their roots. As vegetation develops, the plants gradually become an increasingly important part of the erosion control system.

 

Another advantage is the natural origin of the material. Coir erosion control blankets are biodegradable, making them suitable for projects where the final landscape is intended to return to a natural or vegetated condition.

 

However, coir should not simply be selected because it is “natural.” Many conditions may require a more durable engineered surface or additional erosion control measures, such as steep slopes, concentrated water flow, heavy rainfall, and demanding erosion conditions. The product specification should match the actual project conditions.

 

A Real Project Example

A useful example comes from Tutong, Brunei, where Concrete Canvas was selected for erosion protection on a 31-meter-high slope near a large electrical pylon.

 

The project involved approximately 2,000 m² of CC5. Several alternatives were considered, including bore piles and vegetated erosion control mats. The vegetated erosion control mat option was rejected because the project team could not ensure that vegetation would establish sufficiently to protect the steep slope. Site access was also challenging, as the pylon was positioned close to the slope edge.

Concrete Canvas was ultimately selected because it could provide surface protection without depending on vegetation establishment. The material was deployed vertically from the crest, secured to the slope, and hydrated after installation.

 

The project was completed in two phases over 21 days by a 10-person team. The case demonstrates an important point for material selection: when a steep or demanding slope needs reliable surface protection and vegetation cannot be relied upon, a hardened erosion control system may be more suitable than a vegetation-based blanket. But this does not mean Concrete Canvas is always better than Coir Erosion Control Blanket. It shows that the correct choice depends heavily on the slope conditions and engineering requirements.
